Major Jewel Hines has served Mississippi’s public safety and corrections community for over thirty years, demonstrating steadfast dedication to Pike County throughout her career.

Major Hines grew up in a law enforcement family. Her mother retired from the Pike County Sheriff Department after 25 years of service as a deputy/juvenile officer and the Detention Center Administrator. Her mother also served as an adjunct instructor for Southwest Community College for over 25 years. This dual commitment to public safety and teaching instilled in Major Hines the values of public service from an early age.
 
Major Hines earned her Associate Degree from Southwest Community College. She
graduated from the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officer Training Academy Basic Class 184 in 1998.

Her dedication to professional development includes numerous instructor certifications such as Mississippi Standards & Training Instructor Certificates in both Corrections and Law Enforcement, ALERRT Instructor in Active Shooter Level 1 and Civilian Response Active Shooter, American Heart Association instructor certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED (HeartSaver and Basic Life Support), MDOC Instructor for the Agent Academy and certified in Corrections Risk Assessment.
 
Major Hines started her law enforcement career in 1992 with the Amite County Sheriff Department in corrections and communications. In 1993, she returned to Pike County and joined the McComb Police Department, serving in communications and the patrol division. She expanded her career with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries & Parks as a Park Ranger III at Percy Quin State Park. Major Hines then served with the Pike County Sheriff Department as a Deputy, working as a School Resource Officer and in juvenile services, demonstrating her commitment to Pike County’s youth population.

She joined the Mississippi Department of Corrections, where she served for 19 years, advancing from Probation and Parole Agent to Area Supervisor in Southwest MS counties. During this time, she developed expertise in correctional administration, security operations, and staff management before retiring from public service.

During this time, she worked at Southwest Community College Work Force Center for nearly 20 years as an Adjunct Instructor and Academy Director over Law Enforcement and Correctional training.  She also volunteered with Pike County Civil Defense. 

After retirement, Major Hines returned to active service under Sheriff Wally Jones as Administrator/Major at the Pike County Detention Center. She oversees policy development, staff training programs, facility renovations, and regulatory compliance. Her diverse experience in law enforcement and corrections, combined with her academic background and instructor credentials, positions her to effectively lead the detention center’s operations.
